Who would be the audience for your media product? How did you attract/address your audience?
The audience for my film is teenagers of both sex around the age of 15-18, I chose this age group due to the age range of the actor/ess so the audience will be able to relate to the characters, plus usually horror films are certificated a 15 so this would be a good age to have as a target audience. When researching in to what our target audience’s favourite films are we constructed a survey and had a couple of teenagers fill it out, the responses we got were positive towards our ideas, such as the most common were horrors or thrillers. The clothing used in the film for the actress was what a teenager would wear on a casual day, we tried to make it feel as if they will be able to relate to her as much as possible to get the sense of fear she is feeling. When we finished filming and editing we decided that we would show the opening to a couple of people from our target audience and find out what they felt about it, and if it was something they would want to watch, their responses are below.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
I decided that Dimension Films would be a good company to distribute our film because they have distributed films with a similar genre to ours such as Scary Movie, Piranha, Devil’s Knot, Halloween and The crow. Dimension films is an American production company owned by the Weinstein Company, it was formally used as Bob Weinstein's label within Maramax Films, to produce and release genre films. They then took this label and departed the Disney-owned Miramax in October 2005. By researching into this before producing our film, we were able to have a look at the style and way their distributed films were made and mind map some interesting ideas, this helped us when producing our film. The way in which 'Dimension Films' distribute their films is that they blanket advertise and post links on social network sites, this would be a good way of distributing our film because most of our target audience use social networking sites daily.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
I feel overall from producing my film that my planning, production and editing skills have developed a lot from the beginning when we created our preliminary task.
I feel that from the planning point of view i have learnt that it is best to look into many different films already made and analyse everything about them including their; shot angles, character expression, lighting, editing, sound, speed and conventions used for the specific genre. I feel that all of these factors help a lot when planning your own film because you can take ideas and work on them to fit your story line.
I feel that my production has improved in factors such as filming, as continuity is a big factor when making a film and i feel that i have improved in doing this and i think that it shows from my preliminary and my film opening. My Editing skills have improved as i have learnt how to use effects well, especially on the transition of shots. I also feel that this shows from my preliminary to my film opening as it flows like a film and does not jump from one shot to another.
Technologies that i have learnt more about whilst producing our two minute film opening are After Effects, Adobe Premiere and the Camera. I feel that with the camera it is only small things but have all built up to the overall quality being much better, for example the different things you can do when filming different shot types whilst also using two cameras to get all of the best angles. I feel i have learnt a lot from editing our film and increased my skill in Adobe Premiere by using more effects and speed/duration. With After Effects i have learnt a lot because i have never used it before, so i learnt how to compose a shot with writing, add effects then import onto Adobe Premiere.

Changes

After many different ideas and film openings we made, we decided that none of them were strong enough to be a final piece so we came to the conclusion that we were going to take all of the best bits from each idea and make a new one. We decided that we would change from a pshycological thriller film to a horror genre,by doing this we had the idea of a guy 'stalking' a girl. This meant that we had to change actors and location aswell as storyline. However, we kept the same target audience as teenage boys and girls. The factors we changed were things such as props - not using an oiuja board or a mask, location - from a house and hut to the wood style area of our school and the lighting to natural then editing it to look darker.

Music

When researching into music we decided we wanted to ask our friend to compose a piece for us, however we found this hard as we were not certain on what we wanted it to be like, so instead we went onto the website www.freesound.org - a free music site that is not copyright. We then listened to all of the different types on the website. We decided to use sounds that build suspense and we may use more than one sound, the sound we decided on will fit our genre because of the tense and suspense feeling we feel that this will work well for our film.

Costume

Film names

There were many different film names we could choose but we felt that 'The Trap' would fit the best, this also went down well with our peers.

Props

When making our first idea we decided we would need an Oiuja board, however when we changed our idea we did not need to use this anymore. Instead we just need to use a mobile phone.

Focus group

Here is an image of our focus group, our target audience will fit well with these teenagers as they are aged between 16-18. We asked what their favorite film is and the majority of answers were horror films.

Preliminary

Similar genres' production companies

The films we previously researched have been produced and directed by these companies. We researched into independant and smaller companies and found one called 'Dimension Films' they have previously distrubuted films such as: -Piranha -Scary movie 4/ 5 -Devil's knot -Darkness -Halloween -Phantons -The crow . The company started distrubuting in n 1992. The Weinstein Brothers took this label with them when they departed from the Disney-owned Miramax in October 2005. Which means they already had a pretty big budget to start with so it isnt independant as it was part of Miramax but it isnt anymore. These are just some films they have distrubuted, as many of them are in the horror genre we thought it would match our film opening.

Fonts

These are some of the fonts we may use for our credits. Our credits will include; our title, distribution company, staring, produced by, directed by, and editing by, we feel that this is the only information the audience need to know at this point.

Similar actors and target audience

We have decided that our target audience is teenagers of both sex. Films that our target audience may enjoy are 'Scream' and 'Shutter island' mainly because the actors in the films are playing around the same age, we intend to do this in our film as well.

Music ideas

As you can see from this image we have asked our friend Corinna Underhill to compose a piece of music for our film, we have also looked into different types we could base ours on such as;
John Murphy's soundtrack for '28 days later' - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lXucG-LC_k&feature=fvst
Joseph LoDuca's soundtrack of 'Army of Darkness' - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlrrNbZNPTs
Franz Waxman's soundtrack of 'The bride of Frankenstein' - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHjJTtPR1Is

Character profile Adam Tippett

We have decided to use Adam Tippett because he is 17 years old and around the age we were looking for which also suits our target audience. For our film we are going to have a teenage girl and boy so he therefore fits in well to this category. We also know that he will be able film when we need him too, because he goes to the same school as us. In our opening we have decided that Adam will be playing the 'stalker' which is one of the main characters. We will not be seeing his face in the opening which will build suspense. In various films of similar genres they use over the shoulder shots like this.

Character profile Parys Gardener

We have decided to use Parys Gardener because she is 16 years old and around the age we were looking for, this also fits our target audience age. For our film we are going to have a teenage girl and boy so therefore she fits in well to this category. We also know that she will be able film when we need her to because she goes to the same school as us. In our opening we have decided that Parys plays the main character because she is a good actress. We have decided that she will play the weak, innocent girl getting watched, in the conventions of similar horror films they always have a character like this.

Gantt chart for time management

The skeleton key

At first it starts with dark scenery. A deep voice over (non diegetic),heavy rain and a camera panning along a graveyard. This is the typical conventions of a horror film. What appears to be screaming there at church service. This gives off a spiritual feeling, like a curse or something similar will be involved. It then cuts to a peaceful non-diegetic sound of piano playing. With bright lighting and a sunny scenery. We then get the impression as she’s applied for a nurse job that someone has something wrong. We later discover he’s got something wrong with him and his wife is trying to cover up. Its mysterious and gives off the impression it’s a horror however its actually a psychological film. The trailer shows most of what's going to happen in the film. They've obviously done there research into that area considering the weather, and society's religion/morals etc.

Shutter Island

The lighting throughout the beginning scene is natural when they are coming to the island on a boat. It is quite a fast opening due to the dramatic non diegetic music. There are quite a few establishing shots to begin with which lets the audience get the feel of the place that they are going to. The island looks dark and scary so these kind of shots help the audience feel like the actors. The detectives look confident arriving to the gates where as the police men are a bit shifty because they know what happens here. The voice over saying ‘ we take only the most dangerous, damaged patients , the ones no other hospital can handle’ this is said whilst the camera is on a character. This is more effective than having the camera on the person speaking. We can tell that this film will be psychological when introducing the patients and the hospital.

Scream

The opening to this film is very tense and has atural lighting throughout. The sound is diegetic when the phone rings and they are having a conversation, however it also had non diegetic, parrallel music over the top to add to a dramatic, tense effect. A variety of shot types are used however it is mainy mid-shots of the women showing her expression. At the start as an audience It would appear as if its a comedy or a romatic movie as the beginging is only of a blonde women on her own. However when the conversation gets going we can tell from her expression that she is scared, so the film could be a horror or thriller.

What lies beneath

This film has a very slow low lighted opening with non diegetic tense music to build up suspense. The scene is very hard to establish where it is set as it is too dark. The music builds up faster when we start to see a character then cuts off when she comes out of the water (bath). The scene is in the bathroom. The woman starts to use a hairdryer, automatically as an audience you assume something will happen or something will appear in the mirror. However nothing happens and the film is a slow start. It goes against the natural conventions of a horror therefore the genre isn’t obvious.

Silence of the lambs

The scene starts with non-diegetic, quiet music, parallel with the outdoor scene. Block capital titles appear on the middle of the screen, this makes the film look a little more lower budget, it was made In the 90s so it may be a little dated. The lighting is natural so the scene looks a bit dark and dreary which adds suspense, this fits with the genre however at the start we don't know this. The camera cuts to a long shot so the scene can be established. A close up of a lady running who looks sweaty, as she begins to run the music becomes more tense and faster this is parallel tot he scene. As an audience it's then made obvious that she's taking part on an obstacle course.

Red Dragon

The scene opens at the orchestra with different various shots of instruments and musician. The use off close ups and mid shots creates suspense alongside the parallel diegetic sound. The camera then pans and zooms towards a guy in the audience, as people leave the orchestra, the camera cuts to a long shot of the house. We don't see them walk there, therefore it's a match-on-action. The houses are quite tall and big therefore we assume whoever owns it is rich. The next scene is a long shot of people round the dinner table, the camera then pans to one another with close ups as they make conversation. It was made in 2002 however was set just after the 50's.
